It has been a long couple of years; we started with miscarriage in 2008 then bounced into epilepsy in 2010, we then quickly advanced to hip dysplasia in 2011 and we come to the close of 2012 with our new friend, Diabetes. It is enough to make one turn to drink. But have we considered the true victim here? the one who is suffering the most? The middle child, the one who seems destined … [Read more...]

Want to know my secret? ~ northernmum…..
I have a secret, it is a bit of a guilty one. I try and hide it but unless I avoid all radio, tv and shopping malls it is pretty impossible. So I am going to share it.... … [Read more...]

DDH: Jumping ~ Life post spica
My daughter has never jumped. She has journeyed to places most two-year olds have never had the misfortune to go, she has experienced surgery, blood transfusions, and week-long stays in hospital cots but she has never had the giggly feeling of her feet leaving the ground and returning safely. She doesn't even know what jumping is... You call to her "Jump" and she crouches down, her lips purse … [Read more...]

These times are changing…..
I am knackered. House moving is pretty challenging work, who knew that six years worth of living could result in so many unpacked boxes. I feel like I live in cardboard, eat off cardboard and by the non ironed state of my clothes, wear cardboard. But it is starting to take shape and starting to feel like home. The children are confused as to the lack of stairs that living in a bungalow … [Read more...]

letting down my daughter…. one mothers parental shame…
To my eldest girl, When you were born I held you like china, terrified you would break but at the same time fiercely aware that I would rip skin from bone of anyone who tried to harm you. I swore to you, as I have to all my children, that I would do my best as a parent, I would try my hardest and I would never let you down. I balls up the last one today. We have known about your dance … [Read more...]

Parenting: When you get pee on your arse….
And so it begins, The blatent beep of the alarm sounds at six thirty and I ignore, already wide awake with a child in my arms who awoke at five but yet I am still reluctant to crawl from my bed and to start the day. The door flies open and crashes into the wall and two squabbling six year olds fall into the room, unaware that it is really still the middle of the night they start to regale me … [Read more...]

I am not ready ~ Northernmum
I blinked and suddenly the store windows had changed, maxi dresses and tiny shorts had been ripped from view and knit wear and cords were hanging from the faceless mannequins. I stood on the high street staring at the rows of shops feeling as if I had been pick pocketed. It was almost as if a stranger had silently reached into my jeans pockets and stolen summer whilst I decided which shirt to … [Read more...]

I. Fecking. Hate. Whistles…~ northernmum
Sat on the beach feeling the warm bask of summer on my face I couldn't help but feel smug. My children played sweetly beside me, my husband hunted crabs to amuse the children. Boats bobbed merrily in the ocean and all was well in the world. Until... "Peeeeeep" a vicious screech sliced through my ear drums causing them to rupture in agony. I staggered a little from my perch on the … [Read more...]

DDH: What you will need when your child goes into a spica cast
BB has been cast free now for almost four months and I still remember the terrifying feeling when she was diagnosed with DDH and the overwhelming worry about how we would cope and what we would need to cope. For anyone who is facing a future with a child with DDH here is an idea of what you will need. First and foremost a rear facing car seat, once in a spica cast your child won’t be … [Read more...]

DDH: How to prevent Hip Dysplasia in Babies – Northernmum
Today I watched my daughter try and jump... She bent one leg and reached out her 'bad' leg straight so she was in a crouch position of some kind. She took a huge intake of breath and summoned all her energy and shouted 'jump' out with an enormous grin whilst merely standing up straight. It was beautifully funny. It was a tiny clue that the effects of DDH have not quite left us … [Read more...]
