Keeping Your Dog Healthy When They Grow Old

When your beloved furry friend starts to grow a little older, it is so important for you to know how to keep them healthy and happy. Just like us, when a dog grows older their joints and muscles will get weaker and they are more likely to suffer from health issues.

As a pet owner and fur-parent it is your ability to ease the load for your furry friend and make their lives as comfortable as you can when they struggle to be as mobile as they once were.

Today we want to talk about some of the things you can do to keep your dog healthy and happy as they grow older.

Buy sensitive foods

It is important to change the food you feed to your dog as they grow to a senior age because they will likely have much more sensitive stomachs than they did when they were young. Investing in good quality sensitive dog food is important and it will ensure that your elderly dog doesn’t suffer from tummy problems and illness as a result of the wrong food. Make sure you keep their gut happy and they will be happier as a result.

Make turmeric treats

Turmeric is a spice that comes in both root form and powder form. It is a spice used a lot of Indian cuisine and most of us think of it as the yellow colour on our rice. However, turmeric also has some strong health benefits such as the reduction of swelling around the joints. When trying to keep your dog healthy it is important to make turmeric treats such as biscuits that you can give your dog each day. The turmeric will reduce joint pain and make your dog feel more mobile.

Give them cod liver oil

As your dog grows older they will start to lose memory as well as struggle with their joints and there is one thing you can give them to help both of these things at once. Cod Liver oil can be poured over their food or given as a tablet and will help to alleviate joint pain as well as help with cognitive function and memory retention. Turn back the clock for your dog this year with cod liver oil and keep them going strong.

Keep them warm

It is incredibly important when your dog gets older that you keep them warm at all times. Just as we do, dogs struggle in the cold and they need some extra layers in the winter particularly to keep them mobile. A blanket while they sleep and a jumper to wear while out and about can make the world of difference and keep your dog happy and healthy for longer.

Brush their hair

To keep your dog healthy it is a good idea for you to brush their hair and get rid of bits of dead skin. This is a hugely important step for older dogs because they can develop skin issues if their skin is not properly taken care of. Brushing their hair as well as keeping them clean is key to a happier life for your dog.
