Taking a family vacation with kids is always a great experience. However, taking long flights with children can get a bit stressful. In journeys longer than a couple hours, kids can get restless and agitated. But who can blame kids for getting restless on a plane, being cooped up in a small cabin is sometimes stressful as an adult! So, here is some advice in how to have the smoothest flight possible even with your little ones by your side.
Let’s be honest, airplane food is not something anyone looks forward to having and kids tend to be picky eaters in general. A helpful tip is to order children’s meals beforehand. Most airlines offer this option of pre-ordering kid friendly meals, so that your children won’t fuss too much more than you about the airline food. If all else fails, keep some of their favorite junk food or snacks on hand to keep them quiet and content.
If you are traveling with a budget airline, such as flying with Ryanair I would recommend you book your seats in advance, that way you can make getting onto the plane a smooth activity.
Ryanair offer cheap flights to a volume of destinations, the low-cost airline connects over 200 airports and due to the fact that it tends to use smaller and, therefore, less busy airports, it is one of the airlines least likely to suffer disruption.
Nevertheless delays and cancellations do happen. If they do Flightright are the company to contact, as they will uphold your rights and fight for your compensation with Ryanair.
Even surprising them with their favorite blanket or small toy can do wonders for a cranky kid. The point is to keep them quiet and busy, so various little activities can keep them occupied and make them sleepy so that you can rest yourself.
The next one is simple; keep them occupied. In flight entertainment will be your new best friend on a long flight. There are always kids movies and shows that will keep them occupied for hours. However, be sure to bring headphones or earbuds that fit their little ears because the ones provided by the airlines won’t. Don’t forget to talk with them about your big adventure, about the place where you are going to sleep (always remember to book ahead) and about all the new things you are going to do and see.
To help yourself, you can also show some pictures of your accommodation as well as the main attractions you are planning to visit, Get the kids lovely and excited before even arriving..
Even though you may not be able to connect to the internet on plane, you can still print them at home and bring them with you. Also, by loading some of their favorite shows and games on your mobile device or tablet or bringing some nice books you won’t have to worry about getting a plane without in flight entertainment.
Another great idea, you can print some colouring pages and, of course, bring different coloured pencils with you. You can download the download the Sesame Street Colouring Pages here.
Your best bet is keeping them occupied for as long as possible.
Lastly, always remember who is in in control. No one is going to sympathize with the parents of the crazy screaming kids running around the plane. You have to make them feel comfortable and more importantly safe on a long flight, while at the same time keeping them in control for the sake of the other airline patrons.
You don’t want to be “that” family; your kids are your responsibility not the airlines. In all you can only do so much, but your calmness and tranquility will set a better example in the long run.
